An astigmatism is blurred vision caused by an irregular shape to the cornea or the curvature of the lens. Both issues don't allow light to properly reach the retina which in turn causes the blurred vision. Thus, an astigmatism is said to be a refractive error because of the inability to properly bend light.
Not all astigmatisms reach the point where they need to corrected. An astigmatism may in fact correct itself over the course of time without any medical aid. If the astigmatism cannot correct itself, there are various treatments that can correct the problem. The most common treatment prescribed is glasses or contact lenses to cure the astigmatism. Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a series of rigid contact lenses that are worn for short periods of time to help cure the astigmatism. With Ortho-K a patient may be able to go all day without having to wear glasses or contacts for their daily needs.
If glasses, contacts, or Ortho-K do not help fix the astigmatism, then it may be time to consider refractive surgery. PRK and LASIK are both suitable choices to help eliminate the astigmatism. Both alter the shape of the cornea to help light access the retina. Dr. Gipson can help you to decide which method of treatment is right for you.
